Rotary Power Shines at the 2006 SCCA Solo National Championships
Submitted by Berny Herrera on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 - 3:07pm

TOPEKA, Kan. (Sept. 29, 2006)--2006 was a great year for Rotary power and drivers at the SCCA Solo National Championships. Those opting for Rotary power took home seven Championships and eleven trophies.

Highlights include a pair of championships for the husband and wife team of Jeff and Shawn-Marie Kiesel; they drove the family FD RX7 to a pair of B Prepared and B Prepared Ladies Championships. These wins were especially sweet because this was Mrs. Kiesel's rookie year and Jeff was coming back from a DSQ in 2005.

In Street Mod 2 you can run-what-you-brung as long as it is on DOT approved tires. The top two cars in class were both 93' RX7s driven by Andy Mckee and Erik Strelnieks. Strelnieks is new to the class as he just finished his 3 rotor 20b conversion near the end of the season. The sweet exhaust note and brute force of the 3 rotor was not enough to take the top spot as Mckee with his trusty single turbo 13b powered car would win the class. It was a great battle with each one of them taking quick time one day and at the end they were only .102 apart for the event, 3rd place was almost three seconds behind.

Tom Ellam from Livermore, CA showed that the old school stuff can still get it done driving his 72' Mazda RX3 to the Championship in E Modified over a factory supported 06' Honda Civic SI.
Borrowing Ellam's car to take a shot at EML was Jennifer Lee who also found herself rewarded with a National Championship.

B Stock was almost a spec class in 2005 with the RX8 taking all but one of trophies. 2006 was only slightly different, with Jason Isley in the 05' RX8 taking back to back Championships in the class, the RX8 took eight of the ten trophies. Carter Thompson showed the 350Z is a contender in the class finishing 2nd and the 05' runner up Joe Goeke put his RX8 in 3rd.
BSL was also a repeat year with Anna Hedly Goeke putting in the winning runs with her RX8, Jennifer Isley also in an RX8 finished 2nd.
