Auto Transmission Rough
Submitted by jj1019 on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 6:24pm

I've had my '05 RX-8 for 7,000 miles and the auto transmission is always so rough. When going around 38 mph or so I feel my car jolting back and forth until I give it gas and make it shift back into 3rd and then let it settle back into 4th. Another instance when I encounter problems with my transmission is passing people on the highway. Of course I floor it and haul ass to pass the person in front of me. Then I let off the gas and let the car coast down to 70 or 75 mph. When doing this my transmission stays stuck in 3rd gear until I either manually shift it or once I get to 70-75 mph I give it a little gas. Am I the only one experiencing this??????????

Transmission problems

I just came across your transmission problem. Had some myself with my 2005 RX8. Rough jerk into gear. Finally after several repairs and visits to the dealership, they replace my transmission. It fixed the problem. Now I have a tapping noise in the engine..whats next !!

I hear what sounds like cards in bicycle spokes in mine. This happens occasionally usually on a cold start and usually when it's time to change the oil at 3000 miles. I honestly don't worry about this nor do I know what it is.

Automatic transmission comments

I have a 2004 RX8 with 49,000 miles and I notice a bit like you describe. At approximately 25 mph when in third and approximately 38 MPH in fourth the transmission convertor locks up and if you could drive with the convertor engaged all the time, that's when you'll get window sticker gas mileage and I mean driving at 55-65 mph.
The next instance you describe, when passing, is the transmission comptuter going into sport (play) mode. It's ready to play as soon as you are. Hope this helps. It's all normal.
I noticed some transmission smoothness after the recall and it feels perkier from a stop. The car has been near flawless and a source of satisfaction in owning this great car.
