I'm not suprised you love your RX-8. Here is my $.02.

I change my own oil at 3,000 miles or 3 months. I use only Mazda filters.

I set oil level at 1/4 " below top full mark.

Yes, oil filter should be good for 4,000 miles or more.

I've used exxon/mobil and Mazda oil and have nearly 49,000 miles now and oil has always remained above the add line.

Surprisingly I got my best gas MPG with Mazda brand oil. Coincedence, maybe as it was light freeway traffic. I feel like I'm bragging but an honest 25 mpg followed by a tank of 24mpg.

I have owned and professional raced many rotary cars,i.e. early 70's to present Mazdas to curently 2 RX-8's You should top off when needed. This engine will use oil for added lubrication of the seals. Also, you are throwing out good money changing oil before 6-7k miles. Stay away from synthetic oils also. Use 5-20 good quality oil.

I check at every fuel up, and add oil probably every 2-3 fill ups. I'd say I go 12-15 fill-ups between oil changes.

Good to know that it isn't just my RX8 that is needing top ups, drive it like a sports car and thought that I had hurt her. Why not use synthetic oil? in the mazda shops they use a synthetyc blend. thanks
