JGTC Round6 FUJI GT 300km RACE
Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 12:00pm

The Fuji Speedway in the Shizuoka prefecture was once again host to a 300km JGTC race on September 25th, with practices anf qualifying on the 23rd and 24th. 44,800 were in attandance on race day under cloudy skys, but a dry track even though a typhoon was spinning off the coast of Japan. Temperatures were in the mid 20C, or Mid to upper 70s. The road temperature was similar, kept cool by the clouds. This was the second time the Fuji was used in the 2005 season.

The #7 RE-Amemiya Mazda RX-7 ran a best qualify time of 1 minute 44 seconds, which put it into 10th place in the GT300 class. The team felt the 10th position called for a full tank of gas in order to make the best use of their time. The 300km race/lace, 66 lap started with the mountain pass, where the #7 increased position and finished the opening lap in 9th position.

The order in GT300 didn't change throughout the first half of the race, with the exception of the RX-7 working its way up from 9th place. The race was a battle, however with the top four cars separated by a matter of millimeters as they jostled for position around the twisty and technical track. On lap 34, the #30 Reckless MR-S got by the leading car, the #43 ARTA Garaiya, while the #46 Dream Cube's ADVAN Z continued to hound the pair from only a few centimeters away. Next up, the #0 EBBRO NSX similarly wasn't giving any track up, holding off the very quick #7 Re: Amemiya Aspara Drink RX-7, itself only a hair's breadth ahead of the #19 WedsSports Celica in sixth.

On the 55th lap, on the Dunlop Corner, the RX-7 succomed to technical problems. The car was retired officially on the 54 lap because it never completed lap 55. The team car ranked 17th in class, finishing 11 laps down.

Round 7 was held on October 16th at at Autopolis. We will have a review of that race quicker than this one!
