Not only did the Star Mazda cars rip up the track at Trois-Rivieres, but Mazda RX-8s in the Grand-Am series blistered the course. The weekend belonged to Sylvain Tremblay and David Haskell in ST Class, from capturing the pole to capturing the checkered flag, the SpeedSource team owned Saturday's Trois-Rivieres Sport Touring 150 in Canadia.
The No. 70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 was fastest in qualifying, and started the race on pole, but after the green flag the No. 27 Acura RSX-S Bill Fenton Motorsports went into the lead, followed by Haskell. Throuh the race first part of the race, the RSX-S lead, but the SpeedSource RX-8 was right on his tail. Haskell was able to get past Curran in turn nine around lap 25. The RX-8 then walked away from the RSX-S over the next few laps, building nearly a 3 second lead by the 30th lap. Haskell made a pitstop on lap 58, and switched drivers, with Sylvain Tremblay piloting the car for the rest of the 41 laps. The pit stop cost the team 1st place for a short while, but when some of the other teams pitted, Tremblay took 1st place, and built up a lead of 6 seconds! That lead evaporated on laps 78-85 with a full course caution after a BMW Z4 took it into a wall between turns 1 and 2. When the caution lifted, the No. 70 car never looked back, and captured the checkered flag.
This was the second weekend in a row Tremblay and Haskell won in the SpeedSource RX-8. It was extra special for Tremblay, who broke his tie with Will Nonnamaker for the most Grand-Am Cup victories. His record-setting total now stands at 19. Haskell's win helped him to extend his lead in the driver championship. |
