Recalls
Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Friday, July 22, 2005 - 10:17am

Ugh. While it isn't "Rotary" news, more of Mazda news, there are 2 recalls out there for our RX-8s, plus a whole lot of unconfirmed rumors about engines blowing here in Vegas.

The first recall has to do with heat buildup under the car while standing still under high idle.

Second recall deals with a casting flaw on the lower control arm in the front suspension.

Third, some people over on the forum are throwing around that 13-28 Automatic RX-8s are at the dealers' service shop in Vegas, waiting for new engines.

I've called my service advisor at Courtesy in Henderson, NV (one of the 3 Mazda dealers in the Vegas area) and she knew nothing about the engine replacment problems... More to come.

I have an 05 RX 8 auto. It has no power and bogs down. I love the car but the power is not acceptable. Does anyone know of any improvements that Mazda will take care of?

2 types of people

there are 2 types of people in the automotive world...
those who want to be cool and those who want to have fun. those who want to look cool will get GTO's, 350z, mustangs, massive SUV's. all they want to do is brag about how fast they go, how many tv's they have, and how often they hit 150.
those who want to have fun will look back at their canyon run and say, "danm. lets go do that again." from my point of view, the power of the rx-8 is not low, its just not directed tword people who want to show off; its for people who like to sit in that seat and go, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... nine thousand RPM

Low Power Automatic RX-8

KrwKenny....Sorry that you hear that your RX-8's power is unacceptable for your needs. Bummer! Did you drive it before buying it at all? I kept mine 3 days before making the purchase final. I have the Shinka Edition with manual; I love it, but I'm more in to cruising slow and letting the Civic, Eclipse and 350Zs have their way on the road. I consider my purchase a luxury car. Anyway, I'm sure there are plenty of aftermarket upgrades you can add to increase power, but be careful with your rare rotary gem. There aren't many experience people on this side of the water to take care of your baby after something goes wrong. Good Luck!

recalls

I took my car in last wed (20th) to Magic Mazda because my rx-8 has been making weird knocking noises on the highway in the heat, and the guy behind the counter told me my car has been recalled. He said it would be several weeks until they figured out the problem, at which point I went to the back lot to get some things out of my car, and saw my car parked next to at least 25 other rx-8's that were being held. after returning to the counter, the guy told me that there were a couple of cars that had been there for 35 days already due to 'some overheating problem they couldn't fix'. I was told that 'their engineers were working on a fix, and would implement it as soon as something was figured out.' also, even if they figure out the fix today, it will still be a long wait for my car because of the amount of cars waiting ahead of me. one of the technicians told me something to the effect of the oil regulator isn't getting enough oil to the engine in the high heat, causing them to lock up. he mentioned a few cases of people's engines seizing up on them while stopped at red lights. so for now I'm driving around in my free crappy rental until further notice.

oil additives

I made the mistake of adding a PTFE additive to my RX-7 engine oil once. I was living in Las Vegas at the time too. The PTFE particles clogged the oil injection passage and the engine slowly self-destructed. I wonder if well meaning owners might be adding something to their oil?

Good point Bill.
I am also concerned with any oil additive that may cause the oil seals to swell up and lead to early failure.

Called Magic Mazda, they said they had a 'few' RX-8s in for engine replacements... adding "it happens" ... leading me to think that is isn't as bad as the 13-28 number mentioned in the forum
