JGTC Round 3, Sepang International Circuit
Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Sunday, June 26, 2005 - 1:00pm

With sweltering temperatures and tropical humidity, round three of the Super GT was not kind to RE Amemiya #7 Amemiya Aspara Drink RX-7. Although the team had great success last year, running 3rd in practice, and qualifying 3rd, the yellow rotary powered race car then had an uneventful run at the Malaysian track to run under the checkered flag in 8th place.

At the practice session on the opening day saw lots of action for the long-awaited Sepang round of SUPER GT. The teams not only had to contend with each other, but the temperatures were scorching and humidity was unbearable. The first 90 minute free practice session had all 44 cars from both the GT500 and GT300 classes was a real treat for the locals in Malaysia. The #62 WILLCOM ADVAN VEMAC 350R crossed the line well ahead of its nearest rivals in practice, the 0.763-second gap clearly showing the strength of the car. The afternoon session was to prove another romp as it cruised to the top spot in its class yet again. The 2nd-placed #43 ARTA Garaiya was one-tenth ahead of the two-time Sepang winning #7 AMEMIYA ASPARA DRINK RX-7; itself eclipsing the well-placed #77 CUSCO SUBARU ADVAN IMPREZA.

The first of the two Official Qualifying sessions for the Sepang round of SUPER GT saw more of the same from the previous day's Free Practice sessions. The soaring temperatures continued, as did the tight battles at the top of the timesheets in both classes. #62 WILLCOM ADVAN VEMAC 350R, clocked a best time of 2:08.403, but it was disqualified after race stewards found an air restrictor infringement. That promoted the #30 RECKLESS MR-S to the top spot, and boosted our #7 AMEMIYA ASPARA DRINK RX-7 to 2nd ahead of the direxiv ADVAN 320R.

As Race day temperatures sored, the #7 RX-7 fell back durring the race to finish 8th. The next round of JGTC will be at Sportsland Sugo on July 7th.
