Standard vs. High Power

High all, first post here...

Drove the RX-8 for the first time when I got my '6' down the garage for servicing. Damn it drives well: the engine smoothness, the cornering, very nice indeed, surely better than the 6 CDVI I drive at the time...

I got my chief to the point that I'll be allowed to lease a non-diesel car next and off course I'm considering the RX-8. Unfortunatly the budget will only allow a standard power version :-( but the standard power version I drove was already convincing enough ;-) I'll have to wait another year though (aarrghh) my '6' not being end of contract and all.

My question was how different the high power version is to the standard power version, in terms of driving XP? Is there a big mechanical difference between the two engines or is it just another chipset to obtain the higher power output? Might want to boost the power when I buy the RX after the lease contract is over :-p

4 port vs 6 port

There is a big difference in the intake: the high power has 2 more intake ports that open up at higher RPMs, for a total of 6 ports. The std power version only has 4 ports.

IN the US, the "std" 4 port can only be found when mated to the automatic tranny. The 6 port comes only with the 6 speed.

The 6 port has a higher red line.

So the housing of a std power renesis is quite different compared to the high power version. So modifying a std power to the power output of a high power would not be simply a matter of modifying the chipset, too bad really.

In Europe Mazda mounts a manual 5 speed tranny on the std powered one thank the lord. I don't get it really: who wants a sports car with a automatic transmission?

Hi.

I have driven the two, and would like to point out my thougts.

I think the std power version make a good figure. It drives well, and has equal torque(actually more by a margin). The difference is noticed first if you start reving it high. Until 5 k rpm, you will probably not notice that you are driving a std (I might feel the torque difference in a std (std is higher)).

The 5 speed in the std is from the FD. It's stronger than the 6 speed, and in my opinion shifts better.

The only downside to the std is the lack of extras. HID lights, etc (differing from where you live). And of course, if you are in the US, and have to have a Auto with the std :-(

Never the less, the std is an RX-8, and it's not the tuned down wannabe that you might think by looking at the HP numbers.
