Shauna Marinus Signs with SpeedSource
Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 - 11:19am

Shauna Marinus, a longtime Mazda driver, has signed with SpeedSource Race Engineering to drive their Mazda RX-8 in the Grand Am Cup Sport Touring class for the remainder of the season. Marinus will be driving the #65 MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Mazda RX-8, SpeedSource's fifth car in their Sport Touring lineup.

"We are very excited to have Shauna on board," commented Team Owner Sylvain Tremblay. "We are gunning for the Manufacturer's title for Mazda and having Shauna in the car will really help. She visited our shop last month and there is a good chemistry between her and the team."

In the first three races of the 2004 Grand Am Cup season SpeedSource has campaigned four Mazda RX-8s in the Sport Touring class. Of those twelve entries the team has amassed ten top ten finishes and a victory in the twenty plus car fields that comprise the Sport Touring class. The victory, which came at Phoenix International Raceway, was the first worldwide professional victory for the Mazda RX-8.

"I am very excited about this opportunity," added Marinus. "When I visited SpeedSource's facilities I was very impressed with their shop and their effort. I want to thank Mazda for helping make this happen. SpeedSource is gunning for the Manufacturer's title for Mazda and I am excited about the role I can play in that."

Shauna Marinus began her racing career in 1989 in a Mazda RX-7. As she has progressed through the ranks of motorsports, she has become a specialist in the sprint race format. Shauna has shown talent from her days of scoring National Championships in the Solo ranks to her recent success in the Speed World Challenge series. In 2003 she became the first woman to podium and score pole positions in the Touring class of World Challenge. The move into the SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 will mark her first serious attempt at endurance racing.

"I am looking forward to getting endurance racing experience with SpeedSource," commented Marinus. "They are a mature team that can win races. I don't know how much luckier I could be than to be partnered with them in the Grand Am Cup Series."

SpeedSource Race Engineering will campaign five Mazda RX-8s at the upcoming race at Mont Tremblant. At the most recent round at Phoenix International Raceway SpeedSource Team Owner, Sylvain Tremblay, and Lead Engineer, David Haskell, co-drive to the first professional victory for the Mazda RX-8 in North America.

"Shauna will be a great benefit to our bid for the Manufacturer's title," added Tremblay. "Her success in World Challenge will translate nicely into the Grand Am Cup and with five cars now, I am confident we can score strong points for the Mazda brand."

At Mont Tremblant, Shauna Marinus will be driving the #65 MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Mazda RX-8. Her co-driver for the 250 mile race will be Paul Mears, Jr. A long time driver for the SpeedSource effort, Mears was named the 2002 Grand Am Cup Grand Sport Rising Star.

In addition to the #65 Mazda RX-8, SpeedSource will campaign the #70 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda RX-8 (Sylvain Tremblay / David Haskell), the #68 / GMD Mortgage Services Mazda RX-8 (Scott Schlesinger / David Tuaty), the #67 Discount Rental Mazda RX-8 (Rich Walker / Nick Fanelli), and the #66 International Jet Traders / Gulfstream Brazil Mazda RX-8 (Marcello Abello / Benoit Theetge).

SpeedSource is offering for sale turnkey ready to race Mazda RX-8s identical to the Phoenix International Raceway winning #70 Mazda RX-8. Interested parties can contact Sylvain Tremblay through the team's website: or by calling (954) 578 7071.

In addition to MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development, the team is also working with Sparco USA, Hawk Brakes, Dynamic Suspension, and Racing Hart Wheels on its 2004 Grand-Am Cup RX-8 program.

June 1, 2004 - 3:03pm off to a good start for a new car winning their third race and qualifying first in the last one. I only hope Shauna can match Sylvain's performance. The RX-8's rep will be much enhance with success over BMW in this series.
