Di Leo sets a blistering pace to claim pole position
Submitted by SuperUser on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 12:21pm

March 19, 2004. Sebring, FL. Under blue skies and perfect track
conditions, series rookie Dan Di Leo set a torrid pace around
the 3.7 Mile Sebring International Raceway road course to
claim his first pole position in the Star Mazda Series North
American Championship presented by Goodyear with a time of
2:00.022.

"My car was excellent," Di Leo said afterwards. "I have
to thank everyone at Star Race Cars and Rick and Steve Cameron
for all their work to get the car to the front of the field."

In a session where the top eleven qualifiers posted times faster
than the fastest LMP2 prototype for the main event, the Mobil
1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, rookies ruled the day. Di Leo and
fellow series rookie, Brian Frisselle, locked up the front
row of the grid, with Frisselle's Ventura Travel Service Mazda
only 88 thousandths off of Di Leo's record setting pace.

Lurking right behind the newcomers and looking to resume their podium
battles of the 2003 season are Moses Smith, who finished third
in the 2003 championship, in the 3 Dimensional Services Mazda,
and second place finisher and 2003 Rookie of the Year, Michael
McDowell, in the Drive 4 USA Mazda.

Thirty-three cars will take the green flag for Friday's 20-lap race, the
first for the new Pro Formula Mazda. With the race scheduled
to start at 2:35 PM Eastern Time.
