Racers Edge to Campaign 4 Pro Formulas
Submitted by SuperUser on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 6:44pm

Defending Star Mazda Pro Series Championship team, Racers Edge Motorsports, announced today that they will campaign four of the all new Pro Formula Mazda (PFM) race cars in this year’s Star Mazda North American Championship Pro Series presented by Goodyear.

The all new Pro Formula Mazda (PFM) race car is powered by the 240hp Mazda Renesis rotary engine. It has a full carbon fiber tub, a 6 speed sequential gearbox, and a stylish new Formula One body style. It also offers drivers state-of-the-art technology with its push-rod inboard suspension and traction control.

Driving these beautiful new machines for Racers Edge will be defending Star Mazda Pro Series Champion, Luis Schiavo, defending Master’s Champion, John Faulkner and new to the team drivers, Mark Pavan and Andre DesMarais.

Luis Schiavo, of Caracas, Venezuela and the current Star Mazda Pro Series Champion began racing cars in 2001 after a very successful international karting career. He knew early on that he wanted to be a ‘race car driver’. And as much as Luis believes destiny plays the major role in determining one’s fate, he surely doesn’t sit back and wait for things to happen! He earned his 2003 Championship title – like all his others – by making a commitment to give 100% and nothing less. He eats right, works out religiously, keeps his mind clean and focused on his job, and most importantly he treats the crew, his teammates and his competitors with respect and generosity.

Luis is eager to complete his schooling and obtain his degree this May so that he can devote his full attention to pursuing a career in Motorsports. With one championship already under his belt and a commitment to defend the title in the coming season, he hopes to follow in the footsteps of other former Star Mazda Champions and parlay his on- track success and dedication into a full time racing career.

John Faulkner, of Rochester, NY came to Racers Edge in 1991 to begin his racing career. Since then, he has successfully campaigned an assortment of race cars, with a special interest and emphasis on the Formula Mazda. In 2003 John challenged for and won the Star Mazda Pro Series Masters Championship and is excited about the opportunity to defend his title in 2004 in his all new PFM. Between pro races, John maintains his skills racing in SCCA Club racing events and just recently won a National event at Sebring Int’l raceway.

Mark Pavan, of Toronto, Canada is new to the team and new to Formula Mazda. He brings with him an impressive resume that includes not only racing successes, but also includes the distinction of being a Gold Medalist in the 1991 Pentathlon World Championship. He has clearly demonstrated an ability to achieve at the highest levels of competition and he is looking to continue to demonstrate it as he campaigns his new PFM in the 2004 Star Mazda Pro Series. Off track, Mark, a former technology analyst has recently been named President and Chief Executive Officer of Passion Media, Inc., an online dating service provider.

Andre DesMarais, of Jacksonville, FL is not only the newest member of the team he is also the youngest. But don’t let his 18 year old age fool you! Andre has been successfully racing shifter karts for many years and holds some impressive championship titles as well as the honor of being the youngest driver to ever go directly from Junior Division to Super Pro. The upcoming 2004 season will not only mark his first venture into Formula Mazda racing, but into car racing altogether as he makes the transition from the karting ranks into professional car racing. He is excited about the new PFM and is looking forward the challenge of getting up to speed quickly.

In preparation for the first race at Sebring Int’l Raceway on March 19th, the team began its official testing of their new PFM’s at Roebling Road last week. They are thrilled with the speed, grip and reliability of the cars right out of the box. As Team Manager and Chief Engineer, Jon Mirachi, put it, “These cars are fantastic! We can’t wait to see what they’ll do once we’ve had a chance to really dial them in!”
