RX-8 Questions Ansered
Submitted by SuperUser on Wednesday, January 8, 2003 - 1:45pm

We have answers to some of the other questions asked on this site over the past week. We would like to first point all of you to the official press kit from Mazda PR. The press kit download is massive, nearly 30 Megs. It is, however, worth the wait. Click here to download. It is a zipped PDF file.
We put together some interesting animations of the RX-8, and the Mazda booth. click on the following images to see the animations

[mvc01494.jpg]270 degree view of Trunk(228k)
[mvc01495.jpg]Flyover of the engine compartment with cover off(1.4M)
[mvc01496.jpg]Rear Door Opening(321k)

Each still frame from the animation can be viewed at this gallery. The thumbnails are rather small, but you can get to each picture
Q&A

can you tell if the moonroof takes up any head room?
Next to no headroom is taken up. Here is an image of the moon roof, with the cover closed. That cover slides back with ease.
Do you have any information on this? What is the display like ie. Audi small and monchrome or Z4 cool and in color?
The nav is in full color, and sets on the dash, above the radio and A/C readout. It can be updated by replacing a DVD in the system
What was the feel of the materials used in the interior?
The material is very high quality. Almost BMW feel. .. actually, it is closer to BMW feel than any other maker on the show floor, besides Infiniti.
The press release this morning said "fully loaded for around $30K, but your article states $32K, why the discrepancy?
With the GT Package, and the NAV, the Final MSRP comes in at $33,100.
How are the front seatbelts kept out of the way when the rear door is open?
There is a slider the seat belt is run on. See this animation for details.
TWIN oil coolers in front ducts. Same poor ventilation design as the FD?
The FD can cool just fine, but with twin turbos, it is a little hard to keep everything cool! Besides, they fixed most of those problems with the Japanese RX-7's after 1997. Twin oil coolers is a good thing!

I'm sure there are more questions, but these are the big ones that have shown up on this site. For further questions, feel free to post a response to this story.

Thanks for the info on the moonroof. Can you give a judgement on the quality of the stock stereo, or do the samples at the show have the upgraded Bose system? Thanks again!

I was curious looked at the specs on the RX8 printed them out nowhere does it give the weight of the car just 50/ 50 weight distribution. I can see depending on equipment ordered it would effect the weight but should have a base weight to compare power to weight ratio.

From the short time I had in the car with the keys on, I sampled a local R&B station, the bass was deep and the highs were high, midrange was in good proportions also.

The system I sampled was the Bose, and I'm told it has 8 inch wolfers in the door.... and the same in the trunk.

I'm told the components from the Mazda6 will fit the RX-8. It is Mazda's Modular Stereo system.

I was told the weight for the fully loaded Auto 1375kg. Thats over 3000 lbs. I was told that may not be the final number, ie it could go down. But use that number for your calcs as an estimate.

When you slide the moonroof cover back, is the moonroof glass?

Perhaps thats a stupid question... why else have an upholstered sliding cover?

Did you get a chance to run through the gears? And if so, if you've had experience with a Miata, could you compare the two (I've read a couple articles that have briefly mentioned this)?

I'm quite sure the moonroof is glass otherwise it'd be body color in the pics showing it and it'd likely be called a sunroof.

Press Kit!

Hi Dan and RX-8 fans:
I emailed Mazda Wednesday after getting their email inviting me to order an rx8 at the rx8orders address, asking about a press kit after detailing my RX-7 ownership history and that my RX-8 Order went fine. They emailed back same morning to call MIB at Mazda (M.Info Bureau). Called them, left voice message w/ address info. This morning received, via overnight FedEx, my Press Kit!
Dan- can you verify if this is what they gave at the show? Has a CD attached to inside of 3 part folder, apparently part 2 CD in case inside, and the text and pics you see on the pdf printed on about 8.5 x 14 paper. Very nice. In addition, in the response to my email, the rep said I'd be getting a gift of a "of an RX-8 book
containing pictures, facts and the type of accolades that the press kit
will likely include". I can't believe the response was so fast both times!

I would say the gear shift feal is closer to the Miata than any other Mazda product out now. It has a much lighter feel than the Mazdaspeed Protege, and is a nice short shift through all the gears.

Yes, the moon roof is glass. Actually, the deffinition of moon roof is a glass sun roof. IE Sunroofs are metal, Moonroofs are glass.
