RX-8 Presale Program
Submitted by SuperUser on Tuesday, January 7, 2003 - 12:12am

Greetings from Detroit and NAIAS. Look for a flurry of RX-8 stories over the next few days, as the official launch of the RX-8 kicks off here in Motown. We start with confirmed news of an RX-8 presale program. The program will run from January 8th through March 7th 2003. Dealers will be allocated a set number of cars, customers can configure options, and colors either online, or at the dealer. Mazda dealers will then order the cars. There will be three deadlines, January 13th, Feburary 7th, and March 7th. Cars ordered in January should arrive between June-August, in Feburary between July and September, and in March between August and October. Pricing will be made available later this week, January 8th at the latest. This program is targeted at enthusiasts. Deposits will be taken, and orders can be canceled at dealer decression, however, MNAO (Mazda North American Operations) suggests all dealers both take deposits and allow orders to be canceled. Customers MUST follow up with dealers, even if they already have a deposit down. The dealer must fill out all the correct paperwork sent from MNAO. There will be a tracking system setup, however it depends on the dealer correctly and completely filling out the order. FAQ:

  • When: Jan 8 to Mar 7
  • How does it work: Each dealer will be allocated a number of cars. These cars are then to be ordered at three times durring the presale period: Jan 13, Feb 7, and Mar 7. For example, if a dealer is allocated 30 cars, 10 cars would be ordered on Jan 13, 10 on Feb 7 and 10 on Mar 7. The dealers isn't supposed to order all 30 at once.
  • Customers cannot buy solely online, they must visit a dealer to complete the order, and receive paperwork.
  • What happens if a dealer excedes the allocated amount? The next earliest time to place an order will be July.
  • Deposits will be taken at dealer descression, however, MNAO suggests dealers take deposits, to ensure the enthusiasts satisfaction that they are buying the car.
  • There will be no test drives before hand, since these cars are the first to come out of the factory!
  • A customer can change an order, with something called a "spec change request" However, the ability to have that change carried out depends on how close the car is to be made. Obviously, the sooner the better, and there is no guarentee changes can be carried out.
  • An order can be canceled, but it is up to the dealer if the deposit is retained.
  • Orders can be tracked if and only if the dealer fills out the order form with the customers email address. Tracking numbers and such will be sent out via email, as an order is linked to a customer.
  • This program is for the US only. Canada, and European, consult your local dealers for details.
  • Customers must bare a little responsibility to ensure the dealer is up on the ordering system. This is something new, and it is hoped the dealers will all be trained, however it is some/mosttimes the case where the enthusiast knows more about the goings on than the dealer.
We will have more information as it becomes available. Stay tuned

No test drive? So what if they are the first ones out of the factory. At least let those who have ordered test drive to make sure it is something they will like.

I pre-ordered the car from a dealer in Thousand Oaks, CA. $500 deposit, I could back out anytime I wish.

I knew more about the rx-8 and the pre-sale campaign then the dealer did... But no surprise right?

Here in Dallas, the dealers knew about the RX-8 and about the pre-sale when I called on the 7th.

I got mine ordered, $2k non-refundable deposit, at a dealer that agreed to msrp. The next day they went with the other dealers in the area to $3500 over sticker. A friend of mine had to go 4 hours south to find a dealer to order at msrp.

Count your blessings your dealer is a dope.

My confirmation letter said I was the 1st person in the DFW metroplex to order. How cool is that?
