SpeedSource RX-8 GT Scores Second Place at Mid Ohio
Submitted by Berny Herrera on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - 5:09pm

September 17, 2011 - Saturday’s race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course marked the season-finale of the 2011 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series calendar. With several teams entering the race in championship contention, SpeedSource knew that it would be an all-out effort. In a hard-fought race, the #70 Castrol Edge Mazda RX-8 finished fifth to claim the 3rd place spot in the 2011 Rolex Series championship. Capping off the season, the #69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 finished in 2nd place at Mid-Ohio to take their fourth podium finish of the year.

There was no doubt that the SpeedSource crew was more than focused for Saturday’s run to the championship. Extensive efforts were put into practicing pit stops and preparing the cars at the shop. Sylvain Tremblay started the race from fourth on the grid and quickly charged for the lead. Early on it was evident that the race would be a gritty fight as the first yellow flag fell just 6 laps in. The race would go to caution two more times in the opening hour setting up many teams for their first round of pit stops.

Jonathan Bomarito took over driving duties and was launched into the lead by a stellar pit stop. He would remain at the front of the GT pack through another series of cautions before pitting the car for the final fuel stop of the 2011 season. The last pit stop seemed to last an eternity as Bomarito had to wait for 19 gallons of fuel to flow. The disparity in filling time saw championship hopes dashed. Nevertheless, Bomarito pushed the car to its limits in the closing minutes of the race. The #70 Castrol Edge Mazda RX-8 would go on to finish fifth at Mid-Ohio. The #70 SpeedSource team along with drivers Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito would claim the 3rdspot in the 2011 Rolex Sports Car Series Championship. This marks the second consecutive top three championship finish for the team.

Long-time SpeedSource teammates Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal scored a strong 2nd place finish at Mid-Ohio to cap off their successful run with the Sunrise, FL based team. The duo ran a typical trouble-free race that allowed them to steadily climb through the GT field and earn a spot on the podium. The 2010 Rolex Sports Car Series GT Class champions ended their season on a solid effort. SpeedSource would like to wish Emil and Jeff the best of luck in their future racing endeavors.

Mazda finished 2nd in the 2011 Manufacturer’s title proving that strength in numbers and having solid and reliable racecars is always a great recipe for success. With no single finish worse than 4th place, Mazda showed that consistency is critical to long-term success.

2012 Season
September 29, 2011 - 12:23pm
Are we going to see the RX-8 back for the 2012 season? I can't remember if the GT class is limited to current production based cars or not. I remember that the GXP-R died out quickly when Pontiac was shit-canned. If so, I'm going to miss having the Mazda's to cheer for as well as the wail of the 20B. I suppose I'll have to root for the R8 or the 458 next year, if I continue to watch grand am racing.
