Direct injection, alternative fuels including hydrogen and/or bio fuels, and a really good ECU tune. See "16X" rotary engine.

a multi-fuel 16x Single Rotor Hybrid turbo Rotary (16xSRHRE-t)in an R100 throw-back.

This could be a good way to justify continual R&D on future RE technology just in case there is a change in direction internally at Mazda.

I say start selling rotaries to the "green bunch" by way of a single rotor engine and platform.
