SpeedSource RX-8s Secure 4th through 6th Positions at Brumos Porsche 250
Submitted by Berny Herrera on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 - 3:03pm

July 05, 2010 - The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 returned to Daytona International Speedway for the Brumos Porsche 250. In front of over 50,000 fans attending that night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race, the SpeedSource crew rolled out their fleet of three purpose-built Mazda RX-8’s ready to race. Enduring the Florida summer heat, the three SpeedSource cars finished 4th, 5th, and 6th with GT point’s leaders Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal leading the pack.

Emil Assentato started the #69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 from the 4th row on the grid after qualifying 8th in GT. The current GT co-point’s leader drove a strong opening stint to put the car in great position before handing over control to co-driver Jeff Segal. Segal steadily climbed his way up to the lead pack in GT, running as high as 3rd mid-race, as he tried to chase down the higher-powered cars of the other manufacturers. Ultimately the duo finished 4th as the highest placing Mazda. The strong performance helps Assentato and Segal further extend their points lead.

Young Mazda ladder drivers Adam Christodoulou and John Edwards made their first appearance at Daytona International Speedway as co-drivers. With minimal experience on the 3.56 mile road-course, the two had to learn quickly. Christodoulou qualified the #68 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda RX-8 3rd on the grid after having no practice on dry tires due to an early morning rain-soaked practice. The pair once again showed the strength of the Mazda ladder program by earning a 5th place finish for SpeedSource; the two have now scored an impressive 119 points in the last four races.

Sylvain Tremblay once again showed his brilliance at the Daytona International Speedway circuit by taking the pole position during qualifying. When the race began, Tremblay piloted the #70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8 away from the field in the opening hour until a tire failure sent him into the pits for an unscheduled stop. The duo of Tremblay and co-driver Jonathan Bomarito would persevere through to the end of the race, earning a 6thplace finish. The #70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8 now trails the #69 team car by 13 points in the overall GT Class standings.

SpeedSource continues its quest for the 2010 championship, both as a team and for the Mazda brand. The team left Saturday’s race earning maximum points ahead of a field of 9 Mazda RX-8’s. With four races remaining in the season, consistency and reliability will play key factors in determining this year’s GT title. The next race of the season sends the team to the New Jersey Motorsports Park on July 18th. Follow the action on live SPEED beginning at 1PM EST.
