Mazda to Enter 4Rotor Powered Furai in Le Mans
Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Thursday, April 1, 2010 - 7:26am

Happy April Fools 2010!

Mazda Motorsports Development today announced that Mazda will return to the top level of professional sports car racing in the 24 Hrs du Le Mans June 12-13 2010. The company will utilize the Furai Concept race car with an improved 'long-stroke' 16x based 4 rotor, named the 32x. This cousin to the current RENESIS-based RX-8 will run on E-100 bio-fuel.

Like the past when Mazda's greatest racing success -- victory at the 1991 running of the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans -- this program too is a full factory-supported program. Mazda has extensive engineering support and has formed a French based team to ensure the success of the engine. Mazda Europe spokeswoman Avril Fous had this to say at the unveiling: "There's nothing like the sound of a full-race Mazda 4 rotor engine at 11,000 rpm, and anyone who's heard one is not likely to forget its distinctive tone."

At first I was elated, then immediately skeptical (every rotorhead knows the RE was banned from Le Mans), then I noticed "Avril Fous." What better prank to pull on rotorheads on April 1 than to say Mazda is actually doing something spectacular with their new experimental rotary?
