I just bought a used 2004 RX-8 from a dealer. Driving home from work, my oil lamp light came on. pulled over. called the dealer. said to check oil level. checked oil, noticed white crud (foam) on the dip stick. cleaned off and reinserted several times. each time, same thing, whitish foam. can someone tell me what this is??
i did not do my home work before i bought this car. i have read all the blogs on very unhappy people replacing motors and many other problems with this year. any advice would be appreciated. thanks

I own an 04' rx8(T Rex) and the samething occurs to me when it's cold out (below 30 degrees). According to the dealer this is moisture absorbed by the engine oil and nothing to worry about. It's preferred that the moisture is absorbed by the oil and not on engine parts (that's the purpose of engine oil). Just make sure that your 8 is fairly level before measuring oil level to get an accurate reading. You'll be fine just perform the proper maintenance and rev it near or at redline daily to keep the carbon buildup to a minimum. Happy motoring.

I own a 2004 Rx8 which currently has 106,308 miles on it, and runs impeccably. At the 100,000 mile mark it started to back fire, and run roughly (erratic idle). It became so severe It sounded like a six cylinder running on 3 cylinders. I limped to the dealer and discovered my catalytic was cooked because the rotors needed reprogramming. According to Mazda it's a somewhat common problem with this model especially that year (1st model year). They replaced the catalytic at no cost to me (900 dollars). They also reprogrammed the rotors. It's been running like a jewel ever since. It sounds from your description you have the same problem. So I recommend you take it to Mazda. If it is the same problem it should be covered under a recall campaign. Wish you much success.
