10th Anniversary of RotaryNews.com + Rumors for 2009 Tokyo Auto Show
Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Monday, August 17, 2009 - 8:07am

10 years ago, rumors about a concept Mazda Rotary appeared in magazines and the still young internet; they were reaching a fever pitch. Most magazines had Mazda unveiling a next generation RX-7, a 2 seat sports car. A few sources claimed Mazda would unveil a 4 door sports sedan, like the Lexus IS series. At the show, Mazda did introduce a new concept, but the RX-Evolv was wilder than anyone had speculated, a 4 door sports car. Over the course of the next 4 years, the RX-Evolv evolved into the RX-8, and revived the rotary community in the US and around the world...
This site was founded to both disseminate the rumors and bring clarity to them. Along the way, we added feature stories, and motorsports coverage. We hope to bring you expanded coverage well into the future.
Now, onto the rumors for the 2009 Tokyo Autoshow The global recession has taken its toll on the auto manufacturers. Many programs have been scaled back or canceled all together. Thankfully, our sources tell us the Rotary Engine program at Mazda is not one of the programs that has been axed. However, the same sources tell us with the current economic environment, it is not the right time to introduce a new sports car concept. We may see a sporty, yet environmentally friendly concept at the show this year. Check back here often for breaking news. We expect to start seeing photos, design sketches, and other leaks late September into early October.

I was used to reading something weekly and monthly before the RX evolve was unveiled. This quietness really sucks. Feels like cabin fever. It has been a long wait on the next generation rotary.

You guys have done a good on reporting the facts and clearing up some of the rumors that spread like wild fire. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this site.

HERE'S TO 10 MORE YEARS.

First off... Dan, Bern and others who've contributed to this site. Congrats. You have definitely kept your fingers on the pulse of what's happening around the world of rotary power, but also internally with Mazda. We appreciate all of your efforts over the past decade.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Mazda has some good news for us this year. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that their concepts are better looking than the YUUGA concept shown in your story. The front end in that concept (unfortunately) looks like the design direction that Acura has taken for it's entire line 2010 go-forward. It looks like a bull-nosed sabre toothed whale. Not a sleek futuristic 2 seat rotary flagship. If that's the best we can do, I'd rather wait longer for something better.

"..not the right time to introduce a concept"? Come on Mazda, when exactly would the 'right time' be exactly? The earth may have turned a bit, but rotary addicts and sports cars buyers alike want the same thing - a powerful, responsive, lightweight car. Did I say make it powerful this time? So whatever you show, whenever that is, make it worth the wait. Give it some style, umph, and we know you know how to do that! Make the next rotary sports car something special...again.
