Mazda UK unveiled the RX-8 at The Sports Car Show
Submitted by SuperUser on Tuesday, May 28, 2002 - 12:00am

Glenn Butcher (our UK/European corespondant) reports from The Sports Car Show in Birmingham about the Mazda RX-8 debut in the UK. Here are Photos from the event, and here is an MPEG Video! Read on for the rest of Glenn's wrapup:

Mazda is redefining the world of sports cars with this truly beautiful and unique car. A "purebred" 4 door sportscar made by the only vehicle manufacturer in the world that still produces the awesome rotary engine.

First impressions are that the car looks even better in the flesh, than what we (in the UK) have seen have on photo's etc.. Many bystanders were commenting on how beautiful the car looked, and that it is a 4 door, 4 seater sportscar - with 250hp. Even other manufacturers at The Sportscar Show were impressed and interested in the RX-8.

The car displayed was painted in pearl yellow. With plenty of head and leg room in the front, and also the back! This is really a proper 4 seater car. Hints of the unique rotary engine everywhere - rear fog light, gearknob, starter button, and door sills, all in the triangular rotor shape. Along with the large tachometer with a 9,000rpm redline right in the middle of the dash!

The RX-8 will be on sale early 2003, and will be a high volume production car for Europe. No doubt it will easily outperform other rivals on the track.

Will this see a return to "Mazda Factory Racing Teams?" - Let's hope so.

Mazda has done it again!
